FRISCO, Texas (Sept. 27, 2017) - Eight North Texas Soccer alums have been awarded NCAA Division I Conference Players of the Week. Samantha Chaiken (Rice) and Cyera Hintzen (Texas) were named Offensive Players of the Week, Ryleigh Bohnenstiehl (Oral Roberts), Nicole Curry (Texas), Jennifer Hiddink (Air Force) and Heather Martin (Texas State) were named Defensive Players of the Week, while Haley Berg (Texas) and Melody Jayroe (Liberty) were named Freshman Players of the Week.
Chaiken earned her second consecutive Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week honor after recording a goal and assist in Rice’s 2-0 win over Louisiana Tech. The senior midfielder was selected as the 2016 Conference USA Midfielder of the Year and currently leads Rice in shots on goal this season. The Dallas native played club soccer for Dallas Texans, where she twice won the North Texas State Cup. Chaiken also competed in the US Youth Soccer Southern Regional Premier League (SRPL) and played in the North Texas Olympic Development Program (ODP) from 2009-10.
Hintzen received the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week accolade after netting the game-winner in a 1-0 against No. 5 West Virginia. The goal was the 2016 Big 12 Freshman of the Year’s fifth of the season and fourth game-winner, which puts her tied for first in the Big 12 in the both categories. The Garland, Texas native played North Texas ODP from 09-13 and represented North Texas at the 2013 US Youth Soccer ODP Championships. Hintzen played club soccer for Sting and FC Dallas and won the 2010 North Texas Soccer State Cup with the latter.
Bohnenstiehl earned her second career Summit League Player of the Week award and first in 2017 after recording two saves and allowing no goals in a win over Tulsa. The junior keeper was named to the 2015 Summit League All-Freshman Team and has led Oral Roberts in starts in each of the last three seasons. The Corinth, Texas native played her club soccer for ASG Gold.
Curry recorded shutouts against Iowa State and West Virginia en route to being named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week. Curry has played every minute between the posts for the Longhorns, recording seven shutouts in 10 games and making 23 saves. The Dallas native played her club soccer with Sting Soccer Club, where she reached the finals of the 2013 North Texas State Cup.
Hiddink was awarded the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week after making five saves in a 1-1 draw against Colorado State and recording a career-high 11 saves in a 1-0 win against Wyoming. The junior goalkeeper has started all nine games for Air Force while only surrendering nine goals and making 45 saves. The Wylie, Texas native reached the 2011 North Texas State Cup semifinals and competed in the SRPL in 2010.
Martin was between the posts for a pair of Texas State 1-0 wins over Georgia Southern and Arkansas State, earning her the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week. The sophomore keeper from Midlothian, Texas started 15 games last season and has started eight this season while committing 24 saves. Martin won the 2010 North Texas State Cup win FC Dallas and competed in the 2011 SRPL season.
Berg was selected as the Big 12 Freshman of the Week after netting the game-winner in a 1-0 Texas win over Iowa State. The goal was Berg’s third of the season and second game-winner. The freshman from Celina, Texas was competed on the Under-18 and Under-19 U.S. Soccer Women’s National Teams over the past two years. Berg has experience playing with Dallas Texans and Solar Soccer Club and competed in North Texas Soccer ODP from 2009-12, in addition to multiple US Youth Soccer Region III ODP Camps.
Jayroe earned a shutout and recorded five saves as Liberty defeated Gardner-Webb 1-0, resulting in the rookie keeper being named Big South Freshman of the Week. Jayroe has earned six starts while recording 24 saves. The Plano, Texas native is a former North Texas ODP player, SRPL competitor and 2016 North Texas State Cup semifinalist with FC Dallas.
